Introductory Umpire Holiday Programme

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR HOLIDAY BREAK TO BECOME A MORE CONFIDENT UMPIRE!

Netball Wellington Centre offer this programme twice each year:

January:  Wednesday 18 January 2023

April:  Wednesday 12 April 2023

Held full day from 9am to 3pm
Held at Ākau Tangi Sports Centre, 72 Kemp Street, Kilbirnie, Wellington
All genders, abilities and disabilities from Year 8 upwards welcome to attend.

Focus on theory including rule understanding and discussion as well as practical activities including whistle-blowing, scenarios and best-practice positioning on court.

A good opportunity for first-timers to gain a gentle introduction to rules and their application while those familiar with umpiring get the chance to further their knowledge and skills.  
Format may vary depending on number of participants registered.

Tutors:
Our own Netball Wellington Centre Staff - Community Director Sue Geale (NZ Badge) and Community Development Officer John Neho (Zone) will guide attendees through the programme and provide ongoing support where required.

Format:
Morning sessions focus on theory moving into practical in the afternoon.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to umpiring
  • The rules explained
  • Conduct of the game
  • ​​​​​​​Dual control umpiring & hand signals
  • Game & whistle protocol
  • ​​​​​​​Idenfity minor/major infringements
  • Confidence on court
  • Chance to talk through umpire-specific scenarios
  • Revision of the NNZ Centre test papers (if of interest)
  • Where to next - earn more about NWC Umpire Pathway

What to bring:

  • Hair tie to keep direction of pass
  • Hand held finger whistle (order in advance or purchase for $5 on the day)
  • Appropriate sports gear to umpire and play netball in
  • Pen
  • Lunch and drink bottle

Cost:   $37.50 per person which includes a netball umpire resource to take home
Optional merchandise for sale:
​​​​​​​$5 Thunderer finger grip whistle - black plastic (recommended for beginners)

How to Register
Once open, registrations are accepted via the yellow button on this page.  
​​​​​​​Registrations open about one month ahead of the start of our programme.

Previous attendees will be advised via email once registrations open otherwise we promote via our website or please "Like" us on NWC Facebook to stay up to date.

Spaces are limited to ensure quality tutoring - registrations close once spaces are full.  
​​​​​​​A waiting list may be created as necessary.
