7v7 Head Start Comp

Term 4 7v7 Head Start Comp helps transition junior netball participants to the 7-a-side netball game. 

This gentle off-season game play opportunity suits netball familiars as well as those new to netball.
Games allow players, coaches and managers to get to know new positions and rule variations.
Players gain a taste of what to expect prior to school trials the following year.

This competition is open to Year 4 players in 2026.

Year 4-6 may previously be familiar with 5 or 6-a-side netball with 3 positions: C, D and A.
Year 5-8 now move into playing 7-a-side netball with 7 positions: GK, GD, WD, C, WA, GA and GS.

Comp Format

  • Games: 39 minute duration
  • Quarters: 4x8 minute
  • Breaks: 2 min, 3 min, 2 min, 11 mins between games allowing for more coaching between quarters. 
  • Games start: 4.05pm or 4.55pm
  • Duration: 4-6 weeks
  • Grades: m​​​​​​ixed, all-female and all-male teams welcome

2026 Term 4 Information

  • Suited to: all junior players transitioning to 7-a-side netball in 2027
  • Game day: Wednesday or Thursday - potential start date 21/22 or 28/29 October TBC
  • Venue: Ākau Tangi Sports Centre
  • Cost: TBC
  • Umpires: self-provided. A great opportunity for Kiwi Whistlers to gain more practical experience.

Unable to provide own umpire? We can arrange one for you if willing to pay the umpire an additional $10 (cash only) as an Umpire Contribution per team, per game, collected prior to each weekly game.

Please note: Contrary to the above video, game duration may vary. 
​​​​​​​In New Zealand Year 7 play 4x10 minute quarters whereas senior college/adults can play 4x15 minute quarters in Premier grade.
